The Keyboard on your phone may not be as interesting as some of the phone’s features, but it is still a necessary tool and one that has been drastically developing behind the scenes.
Swype, a Seattle based company is revolutionizing the way the cell phone keyboard works. The Swype keyboard was initially designed to assist people with disabilities, namely those that are unable to use full dexterity. Instead of pressing individual buttons, the user simply swipes their hand across the screen and its systems use a range of custom designed algorithms to correctly guess what you are attempting to write, and then it fills in the gaps for you.
While it could replace the traditional keyboard, Swype have innovated a system that still allows the old keyboard to be used if it suits the user better. It has a lot of potential with gaming consoles, laptops, music players and PC’s on the list of possible applications. Swype however is focusing its energy on infiltrating the lucrative cell phone market.
Swype’s issue is getting their program on board with the big companies like Apple, who have been working on their own version of this program for some time; but Swype has been making some head way. Consumers will be able to see Swype used in phones as of late this year, but as to which brands have signed on- Swype is keeping its lips sealed.
